Whilst I make no claim to be a graphic designer, producing a simple static website like this one is relatively easy to do using the many free open source templates available on the internet which have been created by someone with a flair for that sort of thing.
This site is based on template designs by Andreas Viklund, which I chose because of its clean, simple lines. It is lightweight - only a few kB per page - so it will load quickly, even over a slow internet connection. And it follows the W3C standards. This ensures that it will work well in any browser, and helps with accessibility by blind and partially sighted users.
The Abergavenny Symphony Orchestra website is another one I put together using the same template, as is the St Edmund's Church site - you may notice a passing resemblance ... For those two I have used PHP and ASP to do some simple server-side scripting, mainly to make it easier for me to maintain.
The LS Design site is one I created myself, based on the look of another design I had seen, but styled using standard CSS.
But if you want to create a site the easy way you can use one of the free online site hosting packages like Weebly, uCoz or Google Sites. With these you don't need to understand html or css at all, just edit in a web browser. Although there are some restrictions with some of the free services, they are much easier to maintain yourself.
